What is Wisdom?
Know also that wisdom is sweet to your soul, if you find it your hope will not be cut off. Prov. 24:14 (NIV)
Who do you think of when you think about wisdom? Someone with a lot of degrees . . . someone who figures things out . . . someone old (who has to be a little smart to have survived!) I guess it depends on your definition of wisdom: the quality of having experience, knowledge and good judgement (Webster - not me). I found another definition: making the choice to do so (be wise) and then act on it. Unfortunately, I am thinking about all the really dumb things I have done in my life.
I really think the way to wisdom is to begin by fearing God. After all, He is the One who has all the answers. And if you're wondering where to find these 'answers,' I'd try looking in the Bible first. Do you remember the character, Solomon, the king who had immense wealth? He had everything a man could want and more. However, when God asked Solomon what he needed, he requested God's guidance. “For the Lord gives wisdom, and from His mouth come knowledge and understanding”. Prov. 2:6 (Read the book of Proverbs. You will not be disappointed because it is like opening up a treasure chest.)
Wisdom is a huge topic, but it is one of those basic needs, like food and water. We really need it. I want to close with my dad, the wisest man I have ever known. The world would have described him as a simple man, getting by as a minister of small churches. However, I saw him as a giant among men. I never saw him turn anyone down when they needed help; he advised with his Bible in hand. The local principal even used him to counsel with the really tough kids at school! He loved and guided his family; but, most importantly, he loved God and lived a life that displayed that. What a really SMART GUY!
So, what is wisdom? I hope you know and seek it for the rest of your life.
