No Matter What
Be cheerful no matter what, pray all the time; thank God no matter what happens.
1 Thess. 5:16-18 Message
This scripture represents three very powerful verses, so I think we should look at them one at a time.
I am not trying to be disrespectful to God in any way, but “No matter what”! ! ! I don’t think God is asking us to be cheerful during tragedies, but in the everyday stuff. For instance, when you drive and no one will let you move over; when you don’t get good service wherever you are; when you are on hold with the phone company (endless list on this one). Why on earth should I be cheerful?
I have two answers: God told us to, and you are to be the light in a world that is growing darker all the time! Christians are different, at least we are suppose to be. My natural response, like you, is to strike back especially when it involves our kids. As a teacher, I learned that one the hard way.
Listen, this isn’t easy for any of us. Our nature is to defend and take up for ourselves. I am not suggesting that you place yourselves in harm’s way, but I am suggesting that you pray before you erupt. Ask the Holy Spirit for help. Count to that magic number (mine is not 10).
Dear God, Help me as I age. I snap easily, demand way too much, and forget who I am in you - A Child of the King.
